As you may have already seen here at Working Class Heroes we love getting ourselves stuck into local environmental projects, while the majority of our work has focused on woodland projects we are also keen to get stuck into other causes. We have recently been expanding our horizons and heading down to the beaches to try play our part in keeping these areas clean.

On our second edition of our summer litter picks we went a little further afield and spent some time filling our bags with all sorts of litter from Walney beach.

Litter on the beach can pose a significant threat to local ecosystems and marine life whilst also tainting the look of our wonderful beaches.

According to a study conducted by Ocean Conservancy (Linked here), there is an estimated 11 millions tons of plastic that enters our oceans every year and a significant portion of that ends up washing up on beaches across the globe.

In the UK the Marine Conservation Society’s Great British Beach Clean found an average of 425 items of litter per 100 meters of beach when they conducted a survey in 2020, with pieces of plastic being the most common.

While only being a drop in the ocean (pun intended), along with helping clean up areas these clean up days can also help raise awareness of these important issues and are an excellent social event for our team and the friends and family who join.

We even had help from a 4 legged friend (Walter)

Another successful trip to the beach.

See you next time!
