Karhu's story began just over a century ago when a small workshop was set up in downtown Helsinki by Ab Sportartiklar Oy. This workshop's first product was sports equipment such as javelins and skis made from locally sourced birch. This Finnish birch had a big advantage in that it was lightweight and flexible, and 4 years later they would change their name to Karhu - Finnish for "Bear". It didn't take long to realise that all every piece of athletic gear they made was top class, so by the 50s they were making their own trainers.
