CALM
Tell your friends you love them
Tom × Marcus · 20 years
I remember vividly meeting Tom as he huddled in his white VW camper, surrounded by Volcom t-shirts, staking out a windswept Ulverston car park at the very beginning of his Working Class Heroes story.
We were naturally drawn together by our love of skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing. His Dad had even sold me one of my first skateboards from his shop North West Cycles. We'd babble and froth at each other about brands and adventures.
Today we still babble excitedly about our last snowboard trip or a mud-whacking Lakes bike ride. But our connection goes much deeper now.
"If one of us is struggling, we are there for each other to really listen."
Using loss for good
In 2012 my soul mate Nelson Pratt took his life. It turned my world upside down—especially when I learned that suicide was, and still is, the single biggest killer of young men.
To use Nelson's story for good, I became a trustee of CALM. I set up a cycle event in his honour which we ran for 10 years, raising over half a million pounds. I'm still a proud trustee today.
The power of openness, honesty and really talking is wildly underrated—and has 100% helped both of us through our own struggles.
Get out there and tell your friends you love them.
You never know how much they might need to hear it.
Love you Tom, you ruddy legend.
— Marcus
