You might think Blighty is only known for all-day drinking, beans on toast, Hugh Grant and The Beatles. Well, let me tell you that there is another hidden gem in our good old country – Mountain Equipment.

In the 1950’s working at his climbing shop, Pete Hutchinson realised that giving his mates discounts wasn’t the way to the top, so he started making outdoor gear around the back of his shop, focusing on the simple details of the gear and pursuing quality over quantity. Due to the quality of the product, Pete moved to small-time manufacturing and in 1961, Mountain Equipment was born.

Most people out there will probably recognise Mountain Equipment. We here at WCH are keen jacket enthusiasts, so M.E. has been on our radar for some time. Living in the Lakes, a GORE-TEX jacket is pretty much the standard issue for most of us, so it made sense for us to bring in some of their amazing outerwear.

We decided to head over to High Dam and wandered up to the tarn wearing the Lightline Down Jacket and the Moreno Fleece, paired with the Rupal GORE-TEX 75D Jacket. It was cold and a little bit wet, so both outfits were absolutely perfect for the conditions.

It’s always good to back a British-born brand, but even if you don’t care about the origin story, M.E. should well and truly be on your list for that next jacket purchase. Based on the weather we’ve had recently, I’d invest now!
