This week, we were back in the woods to have another go at clearing some Holly. Holly is native to the UK, it’s a plant that is commonly found in woodland, scrub and hedgerows.
While holly is not an invasive plant it can grow uncontrolled in areas such as the woodland we were at. Our task here was to thin out the holly – clearing room in the forest for new trees and other native shrubs to flourish. The difference with this week is that we didn’t need to take all the holly trees out, just enough to allow more light in.
Holly does offer value to wildlife so it was important we left enough for the birds and other woodland animals to use. We also made sure to check any trees for bird nests before removing them, leaving any with nests alone.
Clearing the forest and allowing more light in is extremely important in increasing and improving the biodiversity of the woodland area.
