Whilst the upper classes dress down to go out, the working class dress up.

Dating back to the second half of the 19th century, and ever since, sub-cultures have been created and driven almost exclusively by those in the working class communities. Starting with the Scuttlers of Manchester in the 1870's and their monotony towards life in the slums, advancing through to the Teddy Boys, Mods and Rockers era of the 50's, through to the Punk and Skin scenes, Ska, Reggae, the 80's and 90's skate scene, right up to today's contemporary minimalism. They were all the brainchild of those fighting for an identity - an identity that correlates conclusively with fashion - so it makes sense to call these people heroes.

With this premise as his inspiration, Working Class Heroes was founded in 2006 by Thomas Bowden. The initial intent was to sell a range of skate and street clothing from all around the globe to the good people of Ulverston, Cumbria, from his tiny shop in a shady looking alleyway. Since 2006 the company has moved to a bigger, better, less creepy location, sweeping up new brands, stories and people along the way.

Our ranges of footwear, clothing and homeware is comprised of a brand mix that appeals to us. Not one that follows a particular genre or alignment, but one that we feel goes together, blurring the lines between distinctions and classifications in order to create something beautiful.

The Cords & Co. x Alpha Industries N-3B Parka

Alpha Industries was founded in 1959 in Knoxville, Tennessee. They began as a contractor for the United States military making flight jackets and vests with some of the latest advancements in functional fabrics (back then, anyway). Some real working class heroes, they began making their jackets with only a few employees using some leased sewing machines, but the company found massive expansion when the army demanded a higher level of quality control for their garments, and Alpha were one of the few able to maintain the constitution in their jackets that pilots needed.

As time went on, Alpha found another market to dominate - the fashion industry. Since then, they've make their own garments as well as collaborating with other industry names. Now, we have a collab with The Cords & Co. New to the world of fashion, The Cords are a recent find in the works of contemporary fashion, with their whole range as a homage to the classic material which has fallen out of the public's eye in recent years - the 70's favourite child, corduroy. There's no better way to move into the future than by acknowledging and honouring the past.

This collaboration has taken shape in a classic winter silhouette - a massive winter parka. The N-3B is designed to keep you insanely warm and comfortale whislt serving you up with a fresh plate of 90's Oasis-like fashion. Starting with the shell, the corduroy is 100% cotton with an 8-wale consturction. This means it has 8 thick ribbs per inch, and so it's durable and somewhat heavyweight whilst remaining flexible. This large, thick shell is paired with a light nylon lining which helps increase insulation and provide a level of comfort for the wearer. The two layers hold a filling of polyester synthetic insulation for wintery warmth. The hood has a faux fur lining as well as a removable fur trimming.

In a relaxed fit, it allows you to personalise the fit with a drawstring running through the hood and the waist, as well as concealed ribbed cuffs. A front two-way zipper has a loop-button storm flap for maximum protection. The jacket also has incredible storage, with two button-up handwarmers, two button-up chest pockets, an open internal security pocket and Alpha's iconic arm pocket. This zip-up pocket has two tags for branding - Alpha's 'Remove Before Flight' slogan and The Cords & Co.

Finishing the branding we have an embroidered Alpha logo to the chest and a tag sewn into the lining near the hem. This jacket is a limited edition with very small production, so if it picks your fancy then snatch it up quick or you'll end up with nout' and you'll be a sad little boy. Or girl. This jacket is unisex after all. Don't gender our parka.
