Helly Hansen was created in 1877 when Helly Juell Hansen, a sea captain, and his wife decided to produce oilskin jackets and pants to help stay better protected when out at sea. By applying linseed oil to cotton canvas, they had created waterproof outerwear. In 1949, a new waterproof fabric called Helox, was sewn into the jackets and was considered a revolutionary technology.
The brand went from strength to strength, creating technical mid and base layers and eventually in 1984 creating a waterproof and breathable fabric - setting a new standard for performance and protection in outdoor clothing. Today sees the brand creating and producing a wide range of everyday clothing but also ranges specifically for skiing, sailing and general outdoor usage.
